Castorp is named after Hans Castorp, the main character of 1924 Thomas Mann's novel The Magic Mountain. According to Steve Alpert, Castorp is inspired by Richard Sorge, a Soviet spy who worked undercover in Nazi Germany and Empire of Japan.
